Competing and thriving in a carbon-neutral future requires access to abundant clean electricity—two to three times more than we produce today. Regions that can deliver this electricity reliably and affordably will enjoy lower costs of living and attract the innovative industries driving the shift to an increasingly electricity-powered world. Those that can’t, will struggle with rising household expenses and challenges securing investment, putting their economic future at risk.
The Transition Accelerator is working to ensure the electricity grid that will power Canada’s future economy is ready when we need it. Through our Electrifying Canada initiative, we’re building a coalition of leaders across the electricity value chain, engaging them in open, action-oriented dialogue, and fostering the relationships needed to create meaningful change. We help design practical and attainable plans, using targeted and transparent analysis to fill in the blind spots holding back progress. Through these efforts, we are driving the development of grid build-out strategies tailored to Canada’s unique regions, enabling the electricity systems that will power a more prosperous future.

The Transition Accelerator provides critical insights to industry and policymakers, paving the way for new value chains for low-carbon fuels and unlocking opportunities in shifting energy markets. As markets worldwide adopt low-carbon solutions, many sectors including heavy-duty trucking, aviation, and industry have requirements for quick refuelling, range, and energy density that electricity and batteries cannot provide.

Our team combines practical expertise, proven industry knowledge, and rigorous system-level modelling to identify the most promising pathways for producing, moving, and using low-carbon fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels, synthetic fuels. By engaging with partners across industry, academia, and government, we identify and address critical gaps, develop real solutions, de-risk new technologies, and launch the pilots, demonstration projects and commercial investments that will keep Canada competitive and support regional economies.
One of Canada’s great strengths is its significant regional diversity, stemming from unique geographies, climates, resources, industries, cultures, and other factors. Because our policy jurisdictions and market contexts are equally varied, one-size-fits-all approaches to economic challenges are often ineffective or unworkable.
To address this, The Transition Accelerator’s Regional and Sectoral Pathways team takes a cross-cutting national and regional approach to enhance competitiveness and clean growth. The team maintains a deep understanding of the work happening across our focus areas, sharing insights with market stakeholders while gathering regional intelligence to inform and shape our key initiatives. This includes National and Regional Decision Support Tools, designed to ensure that pathway modelling remains accessible, dynamic, and transparent. The team also maintains a broad network of relationships to gather intelligence on regional priorities, policies, and market changes. These insights inform the Transition Accelerator’s work, ensuring that it remains relevant and drives action toward a competitive economy in a carbon-neutral world.

Building from the foundations of the 2019 report The Transition Accelerator: Building Pathways to a Sustainable Future, the Accelerator works with innovative groups to create visions of a socially and economically desirable future in a carbon-neutral world, and to understand and build out transition pathways that will enable Canada to get there. The Accelerator’s role is that of an enabler, facilitator, and force multiplier that forms coalitions to take steps down these pathways and get change moving on the ground.
